✨What would happen if you loved yourself as you are right now?✨

How would that feel? What would change?

Do you feel resistance or worry when you consider that question? What is causing that resistance?

A few weeks ago when I asked what kind of content you all wanted this month, overwhelmingly you said you wanted me to talk about self-love. Each time I talk about it, I get questions along the line of, “But you always talk about change, aren’t change and self-love opposites?”

My response is, “They shouldn’t be” but the reality is that too often they are.

Sometimes we pursue changes because we think the change will address some insecurity we have. Improving health may be a secondary outcome we’re hoping for, but if we dig into the root of why we want the change, it’s often linked to something we don’t like about ourselves.

I hate to say it, but whatever change you’re hoping to make will NOT solve the problem of insecurity or confidence - because those 2 things are internal.

What will solve insecurity and confidence? Arriving at a place of at least self-acceptance if not self-love. Knowing that your worth is fixed regardless of whether or not you meet a goal. Getting to know the things you like about yourself and positioning yourself to lean into your individual strengths.

The coaching process I follow actually works alongside these ideas to help people develop a sense of self-acceptance or love in the process of making their change or pursuing their goal. Why? Because changing from that place of acceptance or love is MUCH easier. You’ve heard me say you can’t hate yourself into change, and it’s true. Coming at a change from a negative place will only make it harder and more likely to fail long-term.

This month, I’d invite you to get curious about these questions and consider how you can cultivate more self-love 💕

💥A little niche fitness humor for you💥

Saw this trend making the rounds and had to jump on (especially since I can’t be in the gym right now 😩).

But while we’re here, let’s talk “gymtimidation”. It’s definitely real, and it stops a lot of us from reaching our full potential when it comes to fitness.

There was a time when I wanted to hide in a corner of the gym so no one would see me doing my workout in case I looked silly 😜. I didn’t want people judging my movements, my form, or my weights.

5 years later, I was teaching group fitness and people were watching me demonstrate workouts on a weekly basis 🤷🏼‍♀️.

How did I get more comfortable? By doing it! That’s easier said than done though, so if you’re feeling intimidated, here are some tips:

👯‍♀️Grab a friend! Strength in numbers y’all. If you’re nervous, having a friend with you can take some pressure off.

🤸🏼‍♀️Try a class! Classes can be a great way to get comfortable with movement patterns and build your confidence.

✅Follow a program. Going to the gym without a purpose can make you feel aimless, contributing to that feeling of “why am I even here?”. Working with a trainer or an app-based program can help you feel more confident because you know which exercises you’re doing and what to expect. Want recs for some good programs? DM me!

Still contemplating your goal or change? Back tracking and thinking maybe it’s not a good idea? Reassuring yourself and giving it a try? Or just straight-up confusion? 😂

🤦🏼‍♀️Mistakes and failures
📚New insights about yourself
😳A heavy dose of being uncomfortable
🥳And a lot of celebration when you get where you’re going

Going after goals IS hard. I know social media makes it seem simple. The social media videos leave out the LIFE that happens around changes, though, and that’s the part that makes it complicated.

I take a different approach with clients. It’s slower 🐌 and less aggressive, but I shifted to coaching that way because it’s manageable. And what’s the point of making a change if you’re going to quit halfway through or end up reverting back to old behaviors because it’s too hard to maintain.

We’re almost 1 month in to 2023 😱🗓️! How are you doing with that 2023 goal?

This is typically the time when people start to quit. It’s not as exciting as it was when your goal was shiny and new, and you might be noticing motivation seems more elusive 🫠.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and under enthused, DON’T QUIT 🙅🏼‍♀️!

There are a few things you can do to keep going with your goal:

1️⃣ Overwhelmed? Scale back. Make sure you’re only trying to focus on one step each week. Ask for help and support when you need it.

2️⃣ Under enthused? Remind yourself why you started. Take 5 minutes to reflect 🪞 on what you’ve done so far.

3️⃣ Find ways to be accountable! Tell your friends, family, co-workers, gym buddies, whoever may help keep you accountable to your goal! Get some friends involved with you!

4️⃣ Hit refresh. Is your goal to move more? Keep the same pattern but take a week where you pick a different exercise class or form of movement. Trying to eat differently? Play with a new recipe! Working on stress? Try a new tactic. Keep most things about the habit you’re building the same, but tweak one little thing to mix it up some and get that spark back!

Don’t let the “newness” wearing off be the thing that throws you off track! Try to reframe and keep going 🚀!!

BODIES 👏🏻 AREN’T 👏🏻 BUSINESS CARDS 👏🏻

If you are making the choice to work with a health, wellness, or fitness professional because they have “the look” 👀, I respectfully challenge you to consider why you’re doing that.

I’ve heard a lot of reasons for this:
👱🏼‍♂️“Well, it’s proof they know what they’re talking about”
(No, it’s not.)

👩🏻 “I want someone who inspires me to reach my goal.”
(Is your goal to look like them, because that’s likely not possible. There are many people who can inspire you and it has nothing to do with aesthetics.)

👱🏽‍♀️”If it worked for them, I know it can work for me.” (Probably not. What works for someone else may not work for you because you have a different body and different life circumstances.)

The list goes on, when really, it needs to stop 🛑.

Your health is important to you, I know it is. That’s why you should care a lot more about someone’s training and education than the way they look 🤓📚.

Additionally, this expectation is really damaging to health and wellness pros or folks considering a career in this space. I literally debated for almost a year whether I should start teaching fitness classes because I was afraid I didn’t look the part 🤦🏼‍♀️.

It also perpetuates the (false) idea that health has a “look” 😖.

This is a call to do better - to both consumers and health and wellness pros. We have to stop perpetuating this terrible concept. It’s harmful on so many levels. Let’s make 2023 the year we shut down this stereotype ❤️.

Check your health, wellness, and/or fitness professional’s resume, not their body composition.
